Even when permission is offered, our preference is to keep the focus where it belongs, on the work itself and the relationship we build with the households we support.

Bellarine Clean isn't the cheapest cleaning service on the Bellarine Peninsula. If you've collected a few quotes, there's a good chance ours won't be the lowest.

That's deliberate.

Not because we think expensive automatically means better, and certainly not because there aren't excellent cleaners working across the Bellarine at all sorts of price points.

It's because we've made some choices about the kind of cleaning service we want Bellarine Clean to be — and what it takes to do that well.

We take our time

One of the simplest differences is that we often allow longer in a home.

We aren't trying to squeeze as many houses as possible into a day. We'd rather allow enough time to clean properly, pay attention to the little things (right down to the folded toilet paper!) and leave knowing we've done the job well.

Regular cleaning also works better when we're maintaining a good baseline, rather than letting things slowly build up until they need a much bigger clean.

Over time, we get to know your home. We know which areas need a little more attention, which surfaces need particular care and what can be rotated through rather than trying to tackle absolutely everything on every visit.

I don't want Bellarine Clean to have a revolving door of cleaners.

You're trusting us in your home. Sometimes you're giving us a key. We get to know where things belong, which surfaces need particular care, whether the dog is likely to make a run for the front door and the little preferences that make the service work for your household.

There's real value in having people who know your home.

So we pay our team well, train them properly, provide good equipment and work hard to make Bellarine Clean a genuinely good place to work.

That's good for our team, obviously.

But it's also good for our clients.

We want good people to join us, become excellent at what they do and stay.

If something goes wrong, we have appropriate cover in place

We work around people's belongings every day, and some of them are valuable — financially, sentimentally, or both.

We're careful. Very careful.

But we're human.

Bellarine Clean carries appropriate business insurance, so if something does go wrong, we have appropriate cover in place.

Hopefully it's something neither of us ever needs to think about.

But I think you should know it's there.

We want to still be your cleaner in five years

This is probably the biggest one.

Bellarine Clean isn't being built as something I can sustain for a little while if I work ridiculous hours, undercharge and do everything myself.

I want it to last.

I want to build a team of excellent people. I want our clients to be able to rely on us. And I want the business to have enough breathing room that when someone is sick, equipment needs replacing or something inevitably doesn't go to plan, the whole thing doesn't fall over.

For a regular cleaning service, I think that matters.

Finding someone you trust in your home can take time. We want the people who find Bellarine Clean to be able to rely on us for years, not months.

So, are we worth it?

That depends on what you're looking for.

There are excellent cleaners working across the Bellarine at all sorts of price points, and we're not going to be the right fit for every household.

Our pricing reflects the way we've chosen to run Bellarine Clean: allowing enough time in each home, employing and looking after good people, carrying appropriate insurance, investing in good equipment and building a business that can provide consistent, ongoing care.

Those things cost more to provide.

For the clients who value them, we think they're worth it.

We're not trying to be the cheapest cleaner on the Bellarine.

We're trying to build a cleaning service people are really glad they found.

There's something slightly strange about cleaning other people's homes for a living.

We see a side of people's lives that most visitors don't.

The overflowing wardrobe. The cupboard you definitely wouldn't open for a first-time guest. The clean washing that's been sitting in a basket waiting to be folded for... some time.

None of what follows is about any one home, or any one family. They're just patterns we notice across many homes, all blurred together — the kind of things you only notice once you've been let into enough front doors to know what's actually normal.

And after a lot of time in a lot of homes, we've come to a reassuring conclusion:

We're all basically the same.

Everyone has the clean washing pile

You know the one.

It's clean. That's the important part.

It might be in a basket, on a chair, at the end of the bed, or somewhere else it's been temporarily placed until someone finds the motivation to fold it.

Sometimes we walk into a bedroom, see it, and think: yep. Ours too.

There is apparently a very large gap between successfully washing clothes and successfully returning them to the wardrobe.

Speaking of wardrobes...

They're full.

So full.

Beautiful home. Beautiful bedroom. Lovely clothes. Wardrobe absolutely chockers.

Shoes stacked on shoes, things shoved onto the top shelf, and about seven centimetres of available hanging space.

We find this enormously comforting.

Nobody is cleaning their skirting boards

At some point, we collectively decided skirting boards were something functioning adults regularly cleaned.

We're not sure where this idea came from.

Almost nobody has time to clean their skirting boards.

That's why we're there.

The rangehood has probably been forgotten

This is one of those things that's directly in front of us every single day and somehow becomes completely invisible.

Until someone cleans it.

Rangehoods collect grease, dust and everything else floating around a busy kitchen remarkably quickly. And because you don't really use the top of the rangehood, it's easy to stop seeing it.

This is normal.

Every house has a cupboard

Sometimes it's a cupboard. Sometimes it's a drawer. Sometimes it's an entire room.

It's the place where things go when you don't know where else they belong.

Batteries. Gift bags. Random cords. School paperwork. A screw that probably belongs to something important. Three things you've been meaning to return.

We all have one.

Mostly, we notice that people are just living

This might be one of our favourite things about this work.

We work in beautiful homes across the Bellarine, but they're still homes.

People are raising children in them. Working. Cooking dinner. Losing things. Buying things they don't have anywhere to put. Getting behind on washing. Walking past the same dusty skirting board for six weeks.

Seeing that, over and over, across so many different homes, has genuinely made us feel better about our own.

There's a strange pressure to have everything together — particularly when it comes to our homes. And when you only ever see other people's houses when they've invited you over, or in the carefully chosen bits they show online, it's easy to assume everyone else is managing it better than you are.

We get to see behind that, across many different homes.

And we can report back:

They're not.

That's part of why we wanted to write this down. It's genuinely not ours to judge — if anything, it's the opposite. It's a nice reminder, for us as much as for you, that homes aren't meant to sit perfectly finished.

They're where people do life.

And doing life, apparently, comes with a clean washing pile.
